Why do a First Look?
With Christmas Day being one of the most popular days to get engaged, here’s the answer to a frequently asked question for all you new brides-to-be...
Why should you do a first look?
Ultimately, I say it’s the bride's decision and that she should go with what she feels most comfortable with, but from a coordinator’s standpoint, here a a few things to consider:
When I got married, my coordinator (who was actually a close family friend of ours so I trusted her opinion) told me this: When you do a first look, you are seeing one another as fiancés — your groom-to-be and his bride-to-be. It’s a special moment that you both can share and be as emotional as you need ... And then touch up your makeup after. And when you are about to walk down the aisle, you are then seeing each other as husband and wife. Yes, you will still be emotional because it is an exciting time, but you would have already shaken your nerves during your first look.
It’s also beneficial to do a first look if you are not having a cocktail hour. Doing a first look allows you to get all or most of your bridal party and family photos done prior to your ceremony which means your guests will not have to wait on you in order for the reception to start.
If you still decide against doing a first look, be sure to talk with your coordinator about how to ensure your day can still run smoothly without your guests having to wait. Anything is possible with the right planning!
Are you doing a first look? If so, why or why not? I’d love to hear your reasoning?
